Others, in Plympton, said they had been woken up by the noise it was so loud. He said: “My partner was starting to go nuts thinking our upstairs neighbour’s phone was vibrating, and it sounds so similar. At the time Mutley resident Joe Tippett, who had approached PlymouthLive, said his wife had confused the sound with their neighbour's mobile phone. In June last year, residents as far away as Plympton had complained about hearing the noise. It is not the first time foggy conditions and a loud foghorn have left the residents of Plymouth feeling as if they'd been robbed of a much-deserved lie in. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has been contacted for a comment. Previously the horn has either been the foghorn from the lighthouse on the breakwater "triggered by an automated system" or it could even be coming from a vessel to prevent collisions at sea. "I live 1.4 miles from the waterfront, approximately 5 miles from the breakwater, and it still sounds like it's coming from next door." He said: "You can't beat being woken up at 5:30am by the Plymouth foghorn. One person who had been prematurely woken up said he sympathised with people across Plymouth as the blare continued. The horn had been echoing across the city until 7am as foggy conditions swallowed the city. From approximately 5.30am a loud and deep foghorn could be heard coming from Plymouth Sound. The Easter weekend may not have started in the most relaxing way for some as they were awoken in the early hours of this morning. ![]()
